2018 Spring Sports Season Recap

Tennis

The St. Pius X tennis team has shown remarkable growth over the season. We have several young tennis players that show a lot of promise. They plan on refining and mastering their skills as they look forward to improving throughout the off-season.

Congratulations to John Cronin, Donovan Curb, Makell Moody, Eric Morris, Catherine Thomas and Nick Thomas for competing in the district tournament.

Golf

The St. Pius X golf team had a successful season through district, regional and state tournaments. The Panthers produced numerous personal best scores at the regional tournament this season. After shooting 77-77 at the regional golf tournament, Matthew Jacobe qualified for the TAPPS Division I-6A State Golf Tournament.

Softball

The SPX softball team finished fourth in a strong softball district. The Panthers had leading district wins this season including a 26-0 win over Incarnate Word Academy, a 12-0 win over Concordia Lutheran, and a 7-0 win over Concordia Lutheran. SPX had an impressive victory over Bishop Lynch in the first round of the playoffs. The Panthers defeated the Friars 4-2. The Panthers ended the season with a loss to St. Agnes in the next round of the playoffs.

First Team All-District: Haley Parks – outfield/catcher, Abigail McGee – infield/catcher, and Emily Dear – pitcher/outfield

Second Team All-District: Alyssa Holik – infield, Grace Farris – pitcher/outfield, and Jennifer Schmalz – infield

First Team All-State: Haley Parks - outfield/catcher

Honorable Mention All-State: Emily Dear – pitcher/outfield

Academic All-State: Abigail McGee and Grace Farris

Baseball

The SPX baseball team finished third in the best district in TAPPS Division I-6A baseball, district three. The Panthers won the season series against district rivals Concordia Lutheran and St. John XXIII. SPX also picked up a 2-1 win against St. Thomas. The Panthers entered a best of three series verses Nolan Catholic in the first round of the playoffs. The series was tied 1-1 and game three was set. The Panthers fell behind early, but after being down 8-1, SPX came roaring back and defeated Nolan 9-8 on a walk off hit. In the next round, the Panthers fell to Liberty Christian.

First Team All-District: Matt Dillard – pitcher/outfield/infield, Mason Pamuk – second base/catcher, and Cooper Padden – pitcher/infield

Second Team All-District: Austin Culver – outfield, and Chris Work – pitcher

First Team All-State: Matt Dillard – pitcher/outfield/infield

Second Team All-State: Mason Pamuk - second base/catcher

Honorable Mention All-State: Cooper Padden – pitcher/infield

Academic All-State: Cooper Padden

Women's Lacrosse

The St. Pius X women's lacrosse team finished with an overall conference record of 8-5 including a big win over St. Agnes 8-6 and a come from behind win against Stratford 16-10. The Panthers finished third in the south district and moved on to playoffs. SPX entered the first round and defeated Friendswood 10-5 in the quarterfinals. The Panthers fell to Stratford in the semi-finals 12-19.

The following women's lacrosse players were recognized in division II for their exceptional impact to the season:

All-State: Katie Pharr – midfield, and Rianna England – midfield

All-District: Audrey Murdock – midfield, and Abigail Foster – goalie

Men's Lacrosse

The St. Pius X men's lacrosse team made it to their second consecutive final four appearance. SPX ended the regular season with a 13-2 dominant performance over Atascocita. The Panthers defeated Awty International 8-6 in the first round of playoffs, but their season ended with an unfortunate loss to Klein in the semi-finals.

In division III, the high honor is all-district. The following men's lacrosse players were recognized by the Texas High School Lacrosse League coaches for their excellent contribution to the season:

First Team All-District: David Lee – defense

Second Team All-District: Anthony Carr – attack, and Jaime Castro – midfield

Third Team All-District: Tomas Arvizu – midfield, Sam Irvin – long-stick midfield, Liam Larriviere – attack, Joey Messina – midfield, Ethan Points – goalie, and Jacob Schmalz – midfield

Rugby

The St. Pius X men's rugby team advanced to the state semi-finals this season. The Panthers fell short in the semi-final game against the Woodlands 24-41 in overtime. The loss ended a five game winning streak for the Panthers, including a massive 87-0 defeat over St. Thomas, a 58-0 win over Lamar, a pivotal 34-17 win against Cy-Fair and a first round playoff win against Allen 41-38 in over-time. During the five game winning streak, SPX scored 290 points while conceding only 67. The Panthers finished fourth overall in the 2018 Rugby Texas High School Championship Tournament.

The following men's rugby players have been chosen to represent Texas in Rugby Texas High Performance: David-John Selby (varsity) and Jacob Hernandez (junior varsity)

Track & Field

The St. Pius X track and field team had an outstanding season. The team broke seven school records and both men's and women's teams finished fourth overall at the TAPPS Division I-6A State Track Meet. The men's and women's teams also finished third at the regional track meet.
