Men's Basketball Finishes as State Runner-up

The St. Pius X men's basketball team ended the regular season with a win over district rival St. Thomas 64-53, pushing them into the TAPPS Division I playoffs. The win over St. Thomas made it seven straight wins for the Panthers going into post-season play.

In the first round of the playoffs, SPX routed the number three seed out of San Antonio, Brownsville St. Joseph, 63-44.

Next, the Panthers faced top seed Dallas Bishop Lynch, who most members of the media saw as the best team in TAPPS. SPX defeated the Friars in a nail biter 48-44 and shocked the TAPPS men's basketball world.

The Panthers earned a trip to the state championship game with a win over Parish Episcopal 68-64 in the final four. This Cinderella story came to an end as SPX was defeated by district rival Concordia Lutheran in the state championship game.

SPX made a nice playoff run that started out with a win over the number two seed out of Dallas, John Paul II. The Panthers defeated the Cardinals 2-1 in a come from behind win, which pushed them into the quarterfinals.

Next up, SPX faced the number two seed out of San Antonio, Antonian. After a full 90 minutes and two overtimes, the Panthers defeated the Apaches in penalty kicks, giving SPX the 2-1 victory and leading them into the state semi-finals for the second year in a row.

Women's Soccer Shows Bright Future

Although the St. Pius X women's soccer season ended in a loss (penalty kicks), the future looks bright as there were many positive takeaways from the 2017-2018 season. SPX reached a 6-8 overall record, which is exceptionally noteworthy considering a winless 2016-2017 season. The Panthers were led by seniors Clarissa Arguelles, Ashley Dalton, Imani Elloitt, and Rianna England.

"Each of the seniors made a positive impact this season," Assistant Coach Nick Young said. "Arguelles was the heart and soul of our squad and always left everything on the field, every game. Dalton was our defensive captain, providing leadership to the two freshmen starting with her, while continually winning one-on-ones with the other team's striker. England was our steady-as-she-goes midfielder with great poise, who led our midfield attack. Elliot was a sparkplug on the front line, consistently harassing opposing defenders and providing stress to the opposing team's back line."

The SPX women's soccer team was composed of 20 players, consisting of 14 freshmen and sophomores. These young women provide an excellent foundation for the upcoming seasons.

The Panthers leading scorer, sophomore Morgan Squires, should continue to make her presence felt as one of the leading scorers in TAPPS. Freshmen defender Emma Huntington, freshman keeper Lora Tresco, and junior defender Madison Mosley will also be back to solidify the SPX defense for the 2018-2019 season.
