The St. Pius X men's varsity soccer team was crowned St. Mary's Hall Tournament Champion over the weekend.

In the first game of the tournament, SPX controlled the midfield and possessions against Austin Regents, which allowed the Panthers to move the ball wherever they wanted while attacking Regents. SPX defeated Regents 5-0.

In the second game of the tournament, SPX took on KIPP UPREP who dominated the Panthers in the first half of the game with more possessions and shots on goal. Senior forward Nicolas Medina would find the back of the net right before half, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

As the second half went back and forth, junior defender Gavin Gaytos had a strong blocked shot, which turned into a fast counter attack by sophomore midfielder Abraham Lopez, leading to Medina's second goal of the game. SPX defeated KIPP 3-0.

Freshman midfielder Dylan Rizo earned "man of the match" by locking down KIPP's best player and frustrating the KIPP offense.

The Panthers faced St. Mary's Hall in the championship game. Both teams played solid defense throughout the game, but Medina beat two St. Mary's Hall defenders to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead and the win.

Senior forward Nicolas Medina, freshman midfielder Dylan Rizo, and junior defender Jaime Castro made the all-tournament team.

Nicolas Medina scored 8 out of 9 goals for the Panthers. Abraham Lopez finished the tournament with one goal. Jamie Castro and senior goalkeepers David Cao led the way defensively, by not allowing a single goal all tournament.
