The St. Pius X High School football team started district play with a 53-42 win over Concordia Lutheran on Friday, Oct. 27 at Crusader Stadium.
Junior wide receiver Jalen Curry ended the night with 26 receptions, breaking the Texas High School Football receptions record. Curry also hauled in 241 receiving yards.
The Panthers took the opening drive 56 yards, ending with a 15-yard touchdown run from junior quarterback Grant Gunnel. The Panthers surprised the Crusaders with an onside kick, recovered by junior linebacker Coby Roberts. Gunnel hit Curry for a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the Panthers up 14-0 with 7:40 left in the first quarter. The Crusaders would respond with a three-yard touchdown run. With 1:35 left in the first quarter, Gunnell found Curry again with a 19-yard touchdown pass to put the Panthers up 21-7.
Early in the second quarter, the Crusaders scored on a 1 yard touchdown run. The Panthers responded with at 4-yard touchdown pass from Gunnell to senior wide receiver Ramon Vitulli. The Crusaders yet again responded with a 25-yard touchdown run.
The Panthers led 28-21 at the half.
The Crusaders tied the game on the opening drive of the second half with a 31-yard touchdown run. The Panthers and Crusaders exchanged a few touchdowns. The third quarter ended with a 29-yard field goal by senior kicker Connor Spiller, putting SPX up 46-42.
With 7:52 left to play in the game, Gunnell hit junior wide receiver Trenton Waggoner on a 10-yard touchdown pass. The game ended on an interception from senior defensive back Ricky Lester.
SPX is now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in district play.
Next up, the Panthers face district opponent Monsignor Kelly at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3 at Parsley Field.
