Panthers Rally Over Duchesne in Volleyball District Opener

On Tuesday, the St. Pius X varsity volleyball team started their district play with a win over Duchesne.

With all three games reaching within points of each other, especially the second ending 26-24, the Panthers showed their perseverance and strong team chemistry.

The Panthers were led by senior setter/right side hitter Karli Stewart, freshman outside hitter Sydney Shupak, and senior outside hitter Jet Walls on the net. Shupak put on a show for her first high school district game finishing with 13 kills. With the help of senior middle blocker Zoe Stoneham, the Panthers kept the ball on the other side of the net.

The Panther defense was led by Stewart and junior libero Abbey McGee. Together, they shut down the Duchesne frontline and allowed very few hits.

After the game, Head Coach Justyna Brewczyk said, "We started a little slow, but we were also very well prepared for our competition." Brewczyk continued with, "Once our defense and offense got more responsive, we executed the game plan and showed up as a team."

Next up, the Panthers travel to Awty International today, Thursday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. Next week they will meet their rival, St. Agnes, at home on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m.
