A foundation for growth and self-advocacy

The Paul A. Gilliam '98 Learning for Success Program is designed to meet the unique needs of students with diagnosed learning differences, while maintaining the rigor of our college preparatory curriculum.

The Learning Center at St. Pius X serves as a guiding framework within the Learning Support model. Through this approach, students build essential academic skills, develop effective learning strategies and grow in self-advocacy, preparing them for post-secondary placement. Counselors and educators collaborate with students to identify strengths, address challenges and connect them with the appropriate supports early and proactively. This program helps students take ownership of their learning while reinforcing confidence, resilience, and long-term academic habits.

Admission Guidelines

Admission to the Learning for Success program requires:

• Submitting a general application
• Psychoeducational evaluation (no older than 3 years)
• 504 plan (if applicable)
• IEP (if applicable)
• Application review from Learning Center specialists

Targeted support for skill development and confidence

Students who need additional reinforcement in mathematics may work with our math interventionist, who provides targeted instruction focused on foundational skills, conceptual understanding and problem-solving strategies.

Support may occur individually or in small groups and is designed to complement classroom instruction while strengthening confidence and performance.

Academic guidance beyond the classroom

Faculty tutorials allow students to work directly with teachers outside of class to review material, ask questions, and deepen understanding.

These sessions reinforce classroom learning and encourage strong relationships between students and faculty.

Structured time for guided practice

Academic labs offer students structured time before the school day to receive additional help in specific subject areas.

Led by faculty and support staff, these labs provide opportunities for guided practice, clarification of concepts, and reinforcement of skills in a supportive, low-pressure setting.

Ensuring access and readiness

A dedicated testing coordinator works closely with students, families, counselors, and faculty to support standardized testing needs. This includes coordinating accommodations, managing testing logistics, and helping students feel prepared and confident for assessments such as the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams.

Students supporting students

Our peer tutoring program pairs students with trained peers who can provide academic support, encouragement, and perspective. Peer tutors reinforce content, model effective study habits, and help foster a collaborative learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help.

A consistent point of connection and support

Advisory is an integral part of the Learning Support model at St. Pius X High School. Through regular meetings with a dedicated advisor and small peer group, students receive ongoing guidance focused on academic accountability, personal growth and community building.

Advisors serve as a first point of contact for students, helping monitor progress and well-being while collaborating with counselors, teachers and families as needed. Advisory lessons follow a curriculum to ensure consistency across grade levels and support meaningful connections throughout the school year.

St. Pius X recognizes that students learn in different ways and at different paces. Through differentiated instruction, learning specialists and faculty collaborate to support a wide range of learning needs while maintaining high academic expectations. Supports are designed to complement the curriculum and help students build strategies for long-term success.
