Academic Advising and Personal Counseling

Mission: To provide all students with academic and emotional support for all four years of high school. The counselor serves as an academic advisor who assists the student in developing a four-year plan that meets both graduation and academic goals beyond high school. The counselors assist in the mental and emotional wellness of every student and provides support, guidance, and resources. Each counselor is a contact person for the parent in the wholistic support of their son or daughter. 

 

spx counselors have many responsibilities to their panthers:

  • Each counselor follows their assigned student based on alphabet from freshmen year to senior year
  • Counselors may engage in individual or group counseling and family/teacher conferences
  • When necessary, counselors will offer referrals and treatment planning with outside professionals
  • Counselors are trained to assist students through Crisis Counseling
  • Counselors meet with student/family annually to ensure students are on track for graduation and college admissions
  • The Counseling Department organizes and proctors test such as PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP
  • Oversees Dual Credit courses with Houston Community College
  • Each counselor can facilitate conversations and conflict resolution between student and teacher 
  • Counselors regularly consult with faculty regarding individual student situations

  • Coffee with Counselors for parents/guardians
  • Wellness programs - antibullying initiatives, depression/suicide/social media safety
  • Test preparation for college entrance exams
  • Safe Teacher/Safe Student
  • Host PSAT 8/9, PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP testing
  • Classroom visits
  • College admissions programming
