Boys' Rugby Team Wins State Championship
Posted April 27
The St. Pius X Boys’ Rugby Team overcame being a second-year team to beat an opponent they had never beaten to claim the Texas High School Rugby Conference State Championship on Sunday, April 25.
The relatively inexperienced Panthers beat powerhouse Kingwood 38-5 in the semifinals to advance to the championship game. St. Pius X previously lost to Kingwood twice last year and once this year.
“Several adjustments to the lineup, along with a game plan change, seemed to make the difference,” said Larry Monks, the head coach for the boys’ rugby team.
SPX went on to defeat Alamo Heights High School 12-5 in the championship game.
During the rugby awards banquets held that weekend, senior Gary Nelson was named to the All-State Team, and junior Jordon Critchlow, junior Daniel Stephens, senior Erik Aguilera and junior Matt Schick were named as Honorable Mentions.

“We’re very proud of our ‘Start Here. Four SPX Athletes Sign Letters of Intent to Division I, Private Schools
Posted February 3
Three St. Pius X High School football players and one softball player signed letters of intent on National Signing Day, February 3. Defensive end Greg Daniels signed with the University of Texas, running back and receiver Venric Mark signed with Northwestern University, defensive end Kirk Poston signed with the University of Colorado and pitcher Samantha Wursteisen signed with Millsaps College.
New Longhorn Daniels racked up 54 tackles, 26 assists, five forced fumbles, 33 tackles for loss, two interceptions, eight sacks and two touchdowns during his senior campaign to wear the burnt orange.
On the other side of the dominant SPX defensive line, Poston had 50 tackles, 35 assists, 22 tackles for loss and 15 and a half sacks to become the newest Colorado Buffalo.
Combination man Mark recorded 20 touchdowns, 23 receptions for 242 yards and 92 carries for 772 yards to cap off his drive to an athletic scholarship to Northwestern University.
Second-year team captain and pitcher Wursteisen signed her letter of intent before even playing a single game as a senior. To date, Wursteisen is a four-year starter for the SPX Softball Team, has been named to the TAPPS All-State Team and All-District Team for three years running and finished off her junior season with a .412 batting average.
“To have this caliber of student athletes coming out of St. Pius X and going on to such stellar colleges, with athletic scholarships, shows the drive our students have to succeed both academically and athletically,” said Jason Kimball, the athletic director for SPX.
SPX Sophomore, Piano Player Highlighted on NPR
Posted February 2
By day, 17-year-old Hidemi “Mimi” Minagawa is an everyday sophomore at St. Pius X High School. But by night, she’s an accomplished pianist who is already studying at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and who has been featured in several concerts around Houston, and most recently on NPR’s The Front Row.
A recent concert manager chose Minagawa to perform on NPR, along with four others, out of 20 artists who performed at the Houston Young Artist’s Concert (HYAC), “A Special Evening of Chamber Music” in January.
Minagawa and the other musicians performed on the Friday, January 22 show, with Minagawa performing Johannes Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance Numbers 1 and 6” as a duet with another HYAC pianist. Minagawa can be heard playing on The Front Row at the 16-minute mark at http://app1.kuhf.org/houston_public_radio-news-display.php?articles_id=1264544769.
Since moving to the U.S. from China in 2008, Minagawa has been studying with Robert Roux, a professor with the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.
“I first became aware of Mimi through my visits in the last four years to Hong Kong where I was a soloist with an orchestra there,” Roux said. “I performed in some concerts together with Mimi, and on one such concert, Mimi played a difficult program with such accuracy and brilliance that I said to myself, ‘I’d better be VERY good tonight to not get outplayed by this young teenager!’
“I thought from the beginning that Mimi was an exceptional natural talent with all of the passion, drive, ambition and strong work ethic to become a pianist of importance in today’s demanding concert scene,” Roux said.
Roux was so impressed with Minagawa that he asked her to move to the U.S. to study with him while attending an American high school. She refused for a couple of years until she reached high school.
“I didn’t want to leave my family until it was time to enter high school,” Minagawa said.
Although she has only been in the U.S. for two years, the strides Minagawa has made in her musical education leaves Roux with high hopes for her future.
“She is capable of being a world-class player, competitive with the best talents from anyplace, anywhere,” he said. “She has set high goals for herself and I will continue to set standards commensurate with those goals.”
Minagawa hopes to have a career as a pianist and cannot imagine a life without music.
“Music is part of my life, and I’ll play wherever anyone will have me,” Minagawa said.
Grandparents Show Up From Near, Far for First-Ever Grandparent's Day
Posted January 19
More than 100 grandparents descended on St. Pius X High School for the first-ever Grandparent’s Day on Tuesday, January 12. Grandparents from all grade levels – and a couple of countries – visited the SPX campus for the first time to have lunch with their grandchildren and to take a tour of the campus.
The prizes for who traveled the furthest attend were awarded to the grandmothers who traveled from Ecuador and Peru to visit with their grandsons.
Freshman Alex Sotomayor’s grandmother, Paulina Zegarra, traveled more than 3,000 miles from Peru to visit St. Pius X High School to enjoy lunch with her grandson and daughter on campus, and to tour her grandson’s school.
“She traveled to the States just for this occasion,” said Gladys Sotomayor, Zegarra’s daughter. “This just meant so much for her to have a connection to the school that Alex attends.”
Sotomayor wasn’t the only student to have a grandparent travel a considerable distance. Freshman Fred Mueller’s grandmother, Ana Falconi, traveled more than 2,300 miles from Ecuador to visit with her family.
Other families traveling a considerable distance in-state include the grandparents of sophomore Ariel Gonzales, Robert and Penny, from Aransas Pass, TX.
Standout RB Moats Visits, Talks to SPX Football Team
Posted November 5
One week before playing a pivotal role in the Houston Texans’ fifth victory this season, running back Ryan Moats visited the St. Pius X football team, watched them defeat opponent Monsignor Kelly High School and spent quality time with several players.
The week after providing tips and suggestions to back-up running back and junior Keaon Hobson, Moats came off the Houston Texans bench to score three rushing touchdowns and propel the Texans to their third straight victory.
“After watching Ryan play on Sunday, I knew I’d better get started on the things he told me about!” Hobson said.
Moats came to St. Pius X to visit his former football coach and current SPX head football coach Rene Ramirez. Ramirez coached Moats while they were both at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas and has known Moats since he was 15.
“Ryan is the kind of person that should be an inspiration to the kids,” Ramirez said. “As with everyone, and with what these kids will go through, Ryan has faced personal and professional adversary and hasn’t given up.”
Although he graduated from a rival school, Moats donned a St. Pius X sweater and delivered the pre-game speech to the team, and spoke to individual players after the game.
“He gave me a lot of tips about how to get faster, how to change directions quicker, stiff-arming techniques and how to use the sidelines to gain extra yardage,” Hobson said.
Hobson plans to use those newfound techniques through the Panthers play-off run beginning the third weekend in November, and throughout the offseason to earn the starting running back job for his senior season. Hobson hopes the additional experience and attention will afford him the opportunity to play football at the University of Miami and major in business.
“These SPX players have the talent to succeed on and off the field,” Moats said. “With Coach Ramirez leading the way, they are definitely being pointed in the right direction.”
SPX Students Perform at Texas Renaissance Festival
Posted November 2
SPX Theater is not limited to just the stage in the auditorium. For the first time in school history, a group of students performed at the Texas Renaissance Festival on October 27, 2009.
Drama teacher Carolyn Taylor took 11 students to the festival to perform The Brothers Grimm Spectacularathon, a one-act play, for the 5th Annual School Days event when the park grounds open their gates exclusively to schools.
“The SPX students had a huge audience with many folks coming up to them throughout the day to let them know how good they were,” Taylor said. “They were definitely a crowd favorite, and it was a great theater experience for them to be on one of the main stages at the Renaissance Festival.”
The event was also a hit with the lucky students that were chosen to perform.
“We had a blast at the Renaissance Festival,” said senior Tori Francis. “It was amazing to perform in front of the crowds there, but it was also somewhat challenging because it was outside and there were so many distractions with folks walking by and talking.”
Many students were bitten by the Renaissance Festival bug and would love to be regular performers during the annual fall festival.
“Being a regular performer at the Renaissance Festival would be awesome,” said senior Kate Walker. “I love how all of the actors stay in character throughout the whole day, even when greeting folks they know!”
After completing their one-act play, the students then got to enjoy the rest of the day at the festival and even ran into SPX alumni Rudy Quiroga ’78 playing the bagpipes.
“It was my first time attending the festival, but I was hooked,” said senior Christopher Henderson. “After our play, it was neat to mingle and talk with all the people who worked there. We were also in costume so a lot of people were coming up to us and wanting to take pictures with us because they thought we worked there, too!”
Others students who took the trip included juniors Nick Kellogg and Belinda Owino, and seniors Matt Wisnoski, Rebecca Hoffman, Christina Gibson, Johnny Adams, Katie Bossaller and Lawrence Pasaoa.
“I picked the students based on the amount of time that they’ve devoted to Theatre SPX, rehearsal commitment and demonstrated leadership in theater,” Taylor said.
Annual St. Pius X Foundation Gala Raises Money, Honors Houston Humanitarians
Posted October 22
The 2009 St. Pius X High School Foundation Gala, Under the Sea, was a splashing success by raising more than $400,000 and honoring Del Sarto Humanitarian award honorees Arthur and Cathryn Holland for their civic and philanthropic contributions.
“We are so honored to be part of the St. Pius X family,” said Arthur Holland. “We are so very impressed with the faculty, staff and students at St. Pius X High School. They are an outstanding example of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.”
Cathryn and Arthur are known for their civic and philanthropic contributions, and both have life-long commitments to social justice and charitable causes through the Equestrian Order of the Holy Seplucher, the Serra Club, the American Friends Society (Florida), the Houston Theresians and charitable committees of various parishes and dioceses, to name a few.
The St. Pius X High School Foundation is honored to recognize the Hollands for their work and generosity on behalf of others, said Edgar Hancock, president of the St. Pius X High School Foundation Board.
“Through their lives of service and philanthropy—from being an advocate for children with learning differences, to the unstinting use of their resources—they embody the spirit of St. Pius X and continue his legacy,” Hancock said.
“Despite the economic decline, we had a near-record crowd of 450 attendees” Hancock said. “Our outstanding attendance and our financial results indicate the great respect and love that people have for St. Pius X.”
Notable attendees to this year’s Gala include Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, several members of the Class of 1959, the first-ever graduating class from SPX, longtime benefactors Raye G. White and Ralph and Martha Marek, and members of both the Foundation Board and the School Board.
The 14th annual gala was held on October 10, 2009, and treated guests to an underwater adventure theme and decorations, live, silent and big board auctions, with auctioneer and Channel 13 anchor, Don Nelson; dinner and cocktails; and entertainment provided by “The Ricky Diaz Orchestra.”
The $400,000 raised from the Gala benefits the St. Pius X Foundation endowment and helps to provide funds for financial aid and school operations.
SPX Students Wear Pink in Fight Against Breast Cancer
Posted October 12
The students of St. Pius X High School are not only tough enough to wear pink, they’re also walking the walk for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To promote awareness, the SPX volleyball team hosted a “Dig Pink” night with the Side-Out Foundation, and raised more than $4,000 by selling 400 t-shirts, while the SPX cross country team participated as a team in the 19th annual Komen Houston Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 3.
More than 32,000 runners and walkers participated in the Race for the Cure, including15 members of the SPX cross country team, complete with matching pink headbands. Although the team had a previously scheduled cross country meet on the schedule for Saturday, October 3, team member and junior Molly Franke approached coach Erin Van Wassenhove about the possibility of running in the Race for the Cure instead.
“I’ve run the Race for the Cure for the past four years and it’s always been a lot of fun,” Franke said. “I just thought, ‘Why wouldn’t we do it?’ It’s for a good cause and people should be a part of it. I was surprised that some members of my team didn’t even know about breast cancer.’
Fortunately, Franke has not personally been touched by breast cancer and became involved with the Susan G. Komen Foundation when she ran her first Race for the Cure while she was in junior high with her track team. In her first year on the SPX cross country team, she’s happy to be promoting awareness amongst her teammates and their parents.
“The kids all feel great about doing this,” Van Wassenhove said. “They heard about this from Molly and they want to contribute. Getting all of their registrations done at the last minute was a nightmare, but a current parent, Andy Sanchez, stepped up and donated the $40 per person entrance fee for every student.”
The team had an impressive showing with four runners finishing in the top 100 for the male and female divisions. Those runners include junior Jake D’Eramo, who finished fourth in his age group of 141 runners and 10th overall for all males, senior Drew Sanchez, who finished 18th in his age group and 45th overall, Franke, who finished 11th in her age group and 40th overall, and junior Holly Josey, who finished 12th in her age group and 54th overall.
The SPX Volleyball team jumped into the action on Friday, October 2 by teaming up with the Side-Out Foundation to host a Dig Pink Night during a volleyball game at SPX. The Side-Out Foundation uses Dig Pink Nights to promote breast cancer awareness and to raise money for breast cancer research. To promote the Dig Pink Night, the SPX Volleyball team and their volunteers sold pink t-shirts for students to wear to school, and for all spectators to wear at the volleyball game on Friday, October 2. With more than 400 t-shirts sold, the volleyball team raised more than $4,000 for the Side-Out Foundation.
“This was our first year participating,” said Preston Smith, SPX volleyball coach. “Last year, three teams in Texas participated; this year, there are almost 100 colleges and high schools. It’s just a great cause and a great celebration of life. Everyone has been affected by cancer somehow, even if it isn’t breast cancer. An event like this opens up that awareness for all of these girls for the rest of their lives.
“We want to be a part in the fight against cancer and to always support those affected,” Smith said. “This is definitely an event we will continue to participate in.”

Hancock Family on Hand for Dedication of Donated Altar Furnishings
Posted August 25
The Feast of St. Pius X was an extra special day for St. Pius X High School on August 21. Along with celebrating our patron saint, SPX held a special liturgy with Archbishop Emeritus Joseph a. Fiorenza, D.D., to dedicate and bless new altar furnishings underwritten by the children and grandchildren of Agnes “Dolly” and Edgar "Lightning" Hancock, former SPX employees. The Hancock family’s ties run even deeper as 16 members of the family have graduated from St. Pius X High School.
The custom-designed liturgical furnishings include a presider’s chair, an altar, an ambo, two processional candles and stands, and a processional cross, which replaced the existing hand-crafted pieces that were donated by the Hancock-Bryse families in 1981.
The new altar furnishings were designed and constructed by Austin artist Wayne Locke and reflects a Catalonian and Italian look with open arched curves and engraved arched accents, said Patrick Spedale, the Director of Campus Ministry for SPX.
“The primary material of American White Oak was selected for its enduring strength and is also indigenous to our local geography,” Spedale said. “The accent wood of Padauk was chosen for its reddish color and represents the red tile rooftops of both St. Dominic’s childhood village in Spain, and also that of St. Catherine’s childhood village in Italy. St. Dominic and St. Catherine are patrons of the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans, who have conducted the school since it was founded in 1956.”

SPX Football Wins 7-on-7 Tournament
Posted on July 15
It’s a new football season, with a new coach, but it’s the same old winning tradition for St. Pius X High School. The restocked and reloaded Panthers participated in the Texas Private School Coaches Association 7-on-7 Tournament July 10-11 in Dallas, walking away with the first trophy, and bragging rights, of the 2009-10 football season.
Beginning the year with a new football coach, the Panthers felt like they had a lot to prove. To determine seeding for the tournament, St. Pius X played three games on Friday. The Panthers won two of the three games, with the lone loss to Episcopal High School Bellaire, to be seeded second for Saturday’s tournament.
Saturday play began with St. Pius X taking on the Oakridge School from Arlington.
“This game was a slugfest,” said Rene Ramirez, first-year football coach for SPX. “Our kids really stepped up to the challenge. That team had three kids already committed to playing Division-I ball at Brigham Young University. They were unstoppable on offense, but when we had to make plays on defense, we did.”
St. Pius X defeated the Oakridge School 39-18, finding the level of intensity necessary to take on their next opponent: Bishop Lynch High School from Dallas, the reigning TAPPS state champions and the team Ramirez left in March for SPX.
“The game against Bishop Lynch was a dogfight,” Ramirez said. “We were tied several times, and both teams only stopped the other team once. Our stop proved to be the bigger one as it was at the end of the game with time running out.
“I won’t say it was like getting that monkey off your back, but it was rewarding to get a quality win against a quality opponent,” Ramirez said.
The Panthers defeated the Friars 40-33 to take on Trinity Valley School from Ft. Worth. St. Pius X dominated the game against Trinity Valley 28-14 with a very solid performance in a high-pressure situation, Ramirez said.
The next game for the Panthers was the championship game, and a rematch against Episcopal High School Bellaire, their only loss of the tournament.
“By halftime, we were up 20-6, and we never lost the lead,” Ramirez said. “They dominated us in the previous game, but we were in such a zone mentally that we were unstoppable.
“I’m very proud at how well we competed against top-notch teams and the statement that we made going into the season at how good we can be.”
Stars on the offense side of the ball from the tournament, and players to keep an eye on this year, include seniors Venric Mark, a receiver who already has 15 offers to play at the collegiate level, and Brent Peavy, quarterback, and junior Lord Byron-Cannon, receiver. Defense stars were senior Josef Slaney, strong safety, junior Matt Barajas, free safety, Kolby Griffin, cornerback, and Kellen Jones, middle linebacker.
